How Etsy search actually works
- Etsy matches the full search query against title, tags and attributes. Exact multi-word phrase matches rank far better than loose single keywords.
- The first ~40 characters of the title carry the most weight and are all most shoppers see on mobile.
- As of 2026 Etsy's matching is NLP-based. Natural, conversational phrasing now outperforms keyword-stuffed strings — 'Whimsical Black Cat Reading a Book Coffee Mug | Funny Gift for Book Lovers' beats 'Mug Coffee Mug Cup Funny Cat Mug Gift For Her'.
- Etsy explicitly advises against repeating your title in your tags. Tags should cover DIFFERENT search terms that the title does not already carry.
- All 13 tag slots should be used. An unused tag is a wasted ranking slot.
- Gifting drives over half of Etsy searches, so occasion and recipient language earns its place.
- Long-tail specific phrases beat broad competitive ones for a shop with little sales history.
What gets a listing suppressed
- Never claim handmade unless the input clearly supports it.
- No trademarked brand names, characters or franchises unless the seller owns the mark.
- No medical, therapeutic or health-benefit claims.
- Avoid 'best', 'cheapest', '#1' style superlatives.
Selling somewhere else too?
